Education drive skips Mukhiya community

Despite the government’s bid to eradicate illiteracy from the nation by 2015, its so-called drive has not touched the residents of Mukhiya of Chandrodayapur-4 in Siraha.

There are over three dozen houses of the community but only one person Uprendra Mukhiya had passed the SLC so far. The Mukhiya community resides nearly two kilometer far to the north of east-west highway from Choharwa.

Although there is a primary school till grade three, the number of the students in the school does not exceed 12, said Uprendra. “What to do with studies, when there is no employment after it,” he said. Daughters should be able to manage household works rather than going to school, Uprendra added.

Shiva Shankar Mukhiya, another local, said that 25 youths had gone for foreign employment in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.Ranjit Mikhiya who studied till third grade has returned to his village from the foreign employment.

Similarly Chulhai Mukhiya, father of 10 children, said sons have gone to the foreign employment and daughters spend the time with the households, why to give education to the children.
