Search operation resumes for missing in Manaslu avalanche

Rescue team has resumed their search operation on Monday morning in the avalanche- affected base camp areas in Gorkha’s Samagaun for the missing climbers.

The death toll in Mt.Manaslu avalanche reached eleven on Monday morning. Seven French climbers, two German climbers and one each from Spain and Nepal lost their lives in the the disaster.

Two choppers belonging to Fishtail and one chopper of Simrik Airlines left for the site of incident after 6 am in the morning but to due to bad weather, the search operation is being obstructed.

According to a police officer Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, rescue crew is yet to pick up those 13 climbers people who were rescued on Sunday but are still waiting at the base camp as thick fog hindered the rescue operation. Meanwhile, the rescue team is also searching three others who are reported missing.

Among the more than 50 persons, who were sleeping at the Third Camp of the 8,156-metre Mt Manaslu at an altitude of 6,600 metres when the incident occurred around 3.00am on Sunday, 18 sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.

The disaster as such, which is actually a blow to the promotion of a tourism sector in Nepal, had not occurred since 1995, when over 40 people( including 17 foreigners) were killed in heavy snowfall in Mt. Everest Region.
