First Nepali Olympian Bhupendra Silwal has passed away at the age of 78 on Thursday night.
Silwal breathed his last at the Birendra Army Hospital in Chhauni. He was suffering from a tumor in his stomach. According to Chairman of Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF), Niranjan Rajbanshi, Silwal passed away while undergoing an operation for his tumor.
Silwal had participated in the Olympic Games of 1964 in Tokyo, Japan to become the first Nepali Olympian. Moreover, Silwal had run bare feet at the Asian Games in 1958.
Silwal was in the audience in this year’s Olympics held in London to cheer for the Nepali team. Silwal was also presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by NSJF earlier this year.
Silwal was admitted to the hospital on Monday.
